Evolution of a Strength Coach Part 2

A few recent events have made me realize that all strength coaches will eventually evolve to the same place. Like many of us, I listen and read a great deal from the internet. One trend that I have seen is that some of the previously “hard core” guys are gradually embracing the corrective exercise/ functional training side of the coin. This made me realize two things:

1-    Why I think the way I do

2-     Why others make fun of me

The reason I think the…

Kevin McNair VHS Speed Tape

Years ago, in the 80's, a track coach named Kevin McNair did an excellent VHS tape on speed development. Unfortunately a Google search gave me the bad news that Coach McNair had passed away in 2008. I am looking for the VHS tape as I am trying to convert some of the great 80's stuff to digital format. Does anyone have one I could buy or borrow?

MMA for Football?

Michael Boyle

“MMA training for an NFL athlete does not only NOT make sense, but would simply be counterproductive. The demands of the two sports clearly could not be any more different from each other. It makes as much sense as choosing to going to chemo therapy because you are sick of shaving your head (Michael Jackson’s doctor said that line, I believe). Taking a multi-million dollar athlete and having him train in such a nonsensical way is foolish and irresponsible… and please… Continue

The Tao of Boyle- Reprint

The Tao of Mike Boyle was written by Nate Green and originally

printed on TMUSCLE: It was reprinted a few days ago and I got some great emails. I thought I'd share it here.

38 years of under-the-bar experience, the best exercises, and why

back squats still suck.

"... Tao is often referred to as 'the nameless', because neither it nor

its principles can ever be adequately expressed in words."

Aw, what the hell, we'll give it a shot.

No… Continue

1 Leg Squats

Take a look at this. Former BU Terrier and current New Jersey Devil Jay Pandolfo performs 1 leg squats with 90 lbs. This was part of a single leg loading experiment in the summer of 2008 that produced athletes performing 10 reps at 100 lbs external load.…

I'm not really sure. I haven't heard but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. If he did I'm sure he's not crying over any spilled milk. He got a pretty nice pay day! This 12-game  losing streak  that the M's are on is not a good testament to the" beautiful rotational athletes" Elliot created either!

I've been reading your book "Advances in Functional Training". As a young CSCS and CPT it has been incredibly insightful... I'm thankful for coaches like you with loads of experience and a wealth of knowledge who are willing to share it with younger guys like me.

Yes, summer is busy. I'm working with a whole lot of athletes with injuries caused by poor or inappropriate training, and so many kids going to those combines and
camps". I look forward to a visit in the fall

Thanks for the add Coach Boyle. Loved the new facility when I visited K Carr on Saturday, especially the new turf. And as always great stuff on, thanks for all the great content. Looking forward to visiting again sometime soon.

That would be great if you could swing by while you are down! Lee was my professor/advisor while I was at Averett. He is a great guy that has helped me a lot. Good talking to you and travel safe down here to Florida.
