During the January '09 Sport Specific Conference, Boyd Epley, one of the foremost authorities in the Strength and Conditioning profession, presented the "Epic Rating". This rating was designed so that a strength and conditioning professional can accurately test athletes to determine which athletes on a given team have the most athletic potential. I'm interested in hearing what others think of the use of the "Epic Rating". As such, I'm including below text from a recent email sent by Boyd describing the use of the "Epic Rating" and how to gather more information on incorporating this rating into your own program(s). Thoughts?

Below is an excerpt from a February 6, 2009 email from Boyd Epley:

Coaches and Trainers – Which of your athletes have the most potential for power sports?

During my talk in Nashville I promised you would be receiving an e-mail announcing free codes. When I was at Nebraska we did not share the EPIC Rating used to identify which athletes would receive scholarships but now that I’m with the NSCA we are announcing Three Free EPIC Rating Codes for coaches to identify talent and compare test scores for athletes. You could enter test data on any of your teams to see which ones have the most potential. For example when two of your athletes jump 30” you don’t learn much. If you know one of them is 180 lbs. and the other is 240 lbs. it’s easy to understand the heavier athlete is more powerful to jump the same height.

The EPIC Rating 0 –1,000 point system based on bodyweight allows you to see talent potential immediately. The EPIC Rating has been standardized so that 500 points on any of the following tests (vertical jump, pro agility run, 10 yard dash or 40 yard dash, is considered a college scholarship athlete level performance for power sports.

A lot of schools and combines test athletes. Let us help you figure out how to evaluate what the test scores mean.

You don’t have to be a member of the NSCA or attend any clinics to use the free EPIC Rating codes from the NSCA to get an idea of how the EPIC Rating can identify talent for you. Test any three athletes and within seconds after entering their test scores, you will be able to identify the one with the most potential for success in power sports. There is a separate index for each gender.

Additional EPIC Rating codes are available from the NSCA in two packages; 50 codes for $100, or 500 codes for $500.

We’re trying to standardize testing in high schools by having all athletes test on a basketball court to prevent wind and different surfaces from impacting the scores. When high schools report the EPIC Rating on their athletes we want college coaches to know what it means. Please help us spread the word. We want every athlete to know their EPIC Rating.

SPARQ vs. EPIC Rating. The SPARQ rating seems to be used quite often, however it appears to me it is less consistent then the EPIC rating. Tests change according to the sport tested and athletes are given an overall rating and then can find out their percentage by position or overall but index points are not given per test like in the EPIC. I am using the testing with my baseball, lacrosse and football teams to see who has been working the hardest in the winter. Each sport starting lifting in mid - November and the coaches kept attendance. For the last three weeks I have taken one team and tested them. The coach helps write down the time. Next week I am taking the athletes who scored in the top 5 from each team and we are going to have a championship. The winning team gets a shirt (they get to design it) and their name goes on the new record board. (The record board is set up to show the Performace Index scores).

I also use it in my PE weight lifting classes. I have been using the testing since the beginning of the year in my PE classes. In weight lifting class I test the students the 1 week of class, the 4 week (for parent teacher conferences) and during finals week. I also video the testing so I can show the parents if their son / daughter is improving, staying the same or getting worse. In a beginning class I do want to test the lifts the first week of school because most students do not know them. I can test their vertical jump (ankle knee hip extension like the squat and clean) 5 - 10 - 5 (acceleration / deceleration in the lower body) and 10 yd which is power. Parents can see their child's running and jumping ability improve over time . (Vertical jump has a correlation to improved cleans / squats) Once the class can clean then I include that as one of tests. This also helps me look at our inseason athletes to make sure that they are not over training.
