I love the side plan type of exercise as well as the bird dog on the ball! Surfing is one of those sport, where training on an unstable surface has its place in order to maximally develop speed and precision in the surfers equilibrium reactions (for a good accessible reference se "Movement That Matters", Chek P). Some squats or jumping onto the ball and balance could be used too!
