After the loss to San Diego State to close out 2008, UNLV head coach Mike Sanford told his team that the Rebels needed to put in the work in the off-season to make sure that a letdown like that would never happen to them again. With the help of strength and conditioning coach John Grieco, the Rebs are well on their way to avenging that defeat.

Speed, heck heavy sled pulls, DE squats, ME squats, band resisted runs, contrast training seems to work well. O yeah and an athlete wired the right way doesn't hurt either. It all depends on what type of speed are we trying to achieve, track speed or football speed or basketball speed? It changes things. I think its funny how some folks train athletes for track speed when that really doesn't apply. Maybe I went way off topic.

Michael, I understand where ya coming from my man but unfortunately most kids, even professional S&C coaches use it as a speed tool. So since so many people truly dont understand SPEED I dont even use it.

Adrian, I understand you reasoning and I'm not sure the context this coach was using it.  I happen to see value it in as a warm up tool for all athletes and to develop better coordination/body awareness in younger, less skilled, athletes.  I do agree it likely doesn't have merit in developing speed and that yes, proper technique is important to gain any benefits.

Because it is. There are many other things to do for foot speed than the agility ladder. Several great prominent track coaches including the late great Charlie Francis calls it Glorified Hop Scotch. Another reason is Why would I want to teach someone to do a 6 inch stride but also look at there feet.

Adrian, why do you think the agility ladder was useless?
