Mac, how is everything going? Are you doing anything with Alfred this fall / winter? Let me know. I will be speaking at the NYS coaches conf. in Jan. It will be in Albany this year. Season is going well and going by pretty fast. We are 54-30 leading all of baseball. I will be attending a few nsca events this fall. I will keep you posted.

Marc, how are you doing? Season is going by pretty fast here. How is your school going? Are we still on for Alfred State this fall?

If you want to email me at wagner.bstrong@gmail.com I will send you a list of our numbers. With wrestling, our indicators are; overhand grip pullup (no leg swinging and from a complete locked out position), conventional deadlift (no straps), front squat, and bench press. I want to incorporate vertical into this years testing to get a power output component to our indicators. We hang clean, and power clean, but our team isn't ready as a unit to test.
    • Donnell Boucher June 18, 2009 at 2:25pm
difinitely pull up reps and weighted. we also do the trap bar dead lift...pulling is important in wrestling so we like those two indicators. you might look into med ball throws [reverse, overhead med ball throw] and track that for power output.

we get ours from williams strength in columbia [they are our main supplier for mostly everything]...you can also google "manila rope" and look for 2" diameter rope...should be able to find some for $4-5/foot
    • Joe Hashey June 10, 2009 at 2:29pm
Mcmaster Carr was the cheapeast place I could find for 2 in manilla, shipping was very reasonable. The rest I gor locally.

Hey Marc, Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it.

In regard to overhead movements..you have to base your exercise prescription on your evaluation and/or screen. If an athlete can't overhead squat well, maintaining the bar in a safe position, snatches are probably not a good choice. Unfortunately, snatches are so widely accepted and in reality, many athletes do not have the shoulder stability/mobility to accept such a load.

I overhead press most of my athletes, and would my baseball players as well if I wasn't working with large teams and could key an eye on everyone. Overhead pressing gets a bad rep 1) from bad program design (too much pressing in general), 2) bad exercise execution (focus on weight, not on posture/torso stability), 3) surgeons - this is probably deservedly so because the shoulders of asymptomatic pitchers (for example) tend to look a lot like those who end up getting surgery - same amount of damage. From this point of view - it's just not worth putting the shoulders at additional risk.

I'll probably elaborate in a blog post next week. Where are you in NY? - I'll be in Scarsdale come May.

Hey things are going well. Spring training is in full swing. I have a little more responsibility this season. I will be in Burlington Iowa this season starting in April. How is the training going? Anything new?
